Who is the judge?
The judge is God.
Why is he God?
Because he decides who wins or loses. Not my opponent.
Who is your opponent?
He does not exist.
Why does he not exist?
Because he is a mere dissenting voice of the truth I speak!
-Quoted from the film "The Great Debaters"
When I first watched this film, I was impressed by these lines. The debate coach drilled this philosophy into the students minds. Who do you allow to be "God" to us, our peers, our fears, or our inner thoughts?
When a person sets their mind to accomplish something, they are generally capable of doing so, assuming that there are no kinks put into the plan that are out of the control of the individual, laws that change etc. Often small twist and turns might fall into the path, but these can be navigated with some genuine effort.
The scene changes however, when the opponent is listened to. When opposing sides state their arguments, they are seldom anything less that 180 degrees from each other, exact opposites. If I were to argue that something is good and you were to argue that it was bad, we might point at similar attributes of the item, but still have differing view points.
If the debater begins to heed the arguments of his opponent, his mind will undoubtedly in some form or another begin to shift to his opponents viewpoint. This is why the opponent does not exist in the mind of the skilled debater; "Because he is a mere dissenting voice of the truth I speak!"
Take a look at your opponents and see who you are letting be the dissenting voice of the truth you speak.
Note: The quoted text refers to a debate team. While some spiritual connections can be made, please acknowledge that some parts do not match correctly, and it is acknowledged by the author that the Opposition does exist, but he only has power when we heed his lies.
